Last weekend was a rare one for the family - no activities planned and no one was working!
So a family day trip down to Mt Tamborine was in order to visit the new shiny Fortitude Brewery, located at the site of the old MT Brewing company.
Having made the 1.5 hour trip to Wally World daily for 10 months for work I had sworn that I would never ever ever ever make that trip again unless we were passing through, but beer, breweries and a day out with the family won over.
Thankfully I knew that Darren from 250Beers had made the trip with his tribe a little while ago so a few quick-fire messages to and from reassured me that the trip would not be in vain and the kids would not go completely stir crazy!
We loaded up the Wagon Queen Family Truckster and set off. The drive once you hit the mountain is great, tight windy roads, great scenery….. If only we were in a convertible!
The brewery building is a huge place, with loads of parking and these grand steps leading up to the building, it looks great site, the potential is amazing.
Walking through there is a bistro, a cheese factory with a shop and most importantly the brewery and bar at the back of the building.
The brewery itself is visible through a huge glass wall, unfortunately they were not brewing that day so I had to contend with explaining what each bit of shiny metal did to the kids, who amazingly didn't seem that interested. :-P
But onto the beer!
There is a big blackboard with all their beers and prices displayed at the bar. I opted for the tasting paddle that comes with 5 beers.
- Summer Light
- Standard Lager
- Original Golden Ale
- Stout (Dry Irish Stout)
- Anzus IPA
I also had a schooner of the Grim RIPA with lunch that was pretty damn good, but I am a sucker for Citra hops, they are always a winner in my books!
The pizzas for we ordered for lunch were great, a thin crispy base, minimal tomato sauce and toppings that worked well together, the family favourite was the 3 cheese, that haloumi was brilliant!
All in all it was a great trip up the mountain. Good food and brilliant beer all wrapped up in a pretty good looking destination!
Pro tip for families, there is a kick arse ice cream shop a short stroll down the road. This was successfully used to bribe the kids into being slightly more patient at the brewery! **thanks to Darren for that tip**
